5 Simple Ways to Brew Better Coffee at Home

You don't need fancy equipment to make a great cup of coffee at home. A few small changes can take your morning brew from okay to amazing. Here are our five favorite tips.

1. Start with fresh beans

Coffee tastes best within a few weeks of roasting. Buy whole beans in small batches and keep them in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. Skip the fridge, since it can add unwanted moisture and odors.

2. Grind right before brewing

Ground coffee loses flavor fast. Grinding just before you brew keeps the aroma locked in. Match the grind to your method: coarse for French press, medium for drip, and fine for espresso.

3. Get the ratio right

A good starting point is 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee for every 6 ounces of water. If you have a kitchen scale, try a 1:16 ratio (for example, 20 grams of coffee to 320 grams of water). Adjust from there to suit your taste.

4. Mind your water

Coffee is mostly water, so quality matters. Use filtered water if you can, and aim for a temperature between 195°F and 205°F. That's just off the boil. Let boiling water sit for about 30 seconds before pouring.

5. Keep your gear clean

Old coffee oils build up and make your brew taste bitter. Rinse your equipment after every use and give it a deeper clean every week or two.
